When Eliza Wastcoat decided to start posting on Instagram, she hoped to improve her social media skills for her agency job and maybe get a couple of freebies from brands. But now she has 50,000 followers and is the voice of tennis fashion on social media.
“I’m Eliza West, and this is the fashion edit,” goes the intro to her regular clips where she rates the tennis looks players are serving on court at each tournament.
When Miu Miu announced their special New Balance collection for Coco Gauff this summer, I immediately referred to Wastcoat’s page, to see if she’d dropped her opinion. When Aryna Sabalenka was yet again overlooked by her sponsor Nike when it came to releasing signature outfits for their top talent, I looked to Wastcoat’s take. Her sharp assessments make me laugh, and she’s always first to post the kit releases for each big tournament.
To some sports fans, these details may not matter much. But they do to me. As a child, I was drawn into the world of tennis by booming serves and epic rivalries, yes, but it was also Maria Sharapova’s dangly diamond earrings or Serena Williams’s latest bold ensemble (the denim skirt was a favourite) that kept my attention when I first started watching the sport.
